About

CurrentCrimeMap publishes monthly crime rates for 209 United States cities, taken from official records and updated every morning. It exists because that information is public but scattered, and almost nobody outside a newsroom has the time to pull it together.

What the site does

in one paragraph

Every figure here is a count of offences reported to a police department. Most of them reach us through the FBI, which collects the same categories from every department in the country under one national standard. That is what lets one city be compared with another. A few cities also publish their own incident-level data, and for those we go further, down to neighbourhoods and individual blocks.

We never publish names, addresses, photographs or individual incidents. The smallest unit on this site is a hundred-block as the police department itself publishes it, and only when enough incidents have been reported there for the figure to mean anything.

Who runs it

independent

CurrentCrimeMap is an independent project. It is not affiliated with any police department, with the FBI, or with any government agency. Nobody pays to appear here, nobody pays to be removed, and no figure is ever adjusted at anyone's request.

The site is free to read and free to cite. Every number behind every page can be downloaded as plain data, and we would rather you check our work than take it on faith. If you find a mistake, tell us and we will fix it and say what changed.

How it pays for itself

funding

Running the site costs money: servers, a database, and the time to keep the pipeline working when a city changes its data format. We cover that with advertising. Advertisers have no say in what we publish, see no data about you beyond what their own systems collect, and never see anything we collect, because we do not collect anything.
