City crime rankings, as reported to the FBI

Every city here is counted the same way: the offences each police department reports to the FBI under the national NIBRS standard, over the last 12 months it has reported in full. That is what makes the list comparable. Rates put cities of different sizes on the same footing; the raw counts are shown too.

Rows marked County Police or Sheriff are the area that county agency patrols, not the whole county: mostly the parts without a police department of their own, with the population the agency serves according to the FBI.

A few departments report less than they record. Where we know that, the row says so, and the city’s own page carries its full figures instead.
