How the questions are made

from the data, every day

No question is written by hand except the one from the victim survey. Each morning the site builds them from the same figures its city, state and homicide pages show, so the answers change when the data does.

Read the rules
  • Two-city questions pair cities of at least 100,000 residents whose populations are within 50% of each other, over the same 12 months. The higher rate is always at least 1.5 times the lower and 100 per 100,000 above it: no near ties. The rates are what each police department reports to the FBI, the only figure counted the same way in every city.
  • “Up or down” questions only ask about clear changes: at least 10% for a city’s violent crime, 5% for a state, and for homicides at least 15% with 30 or more homicides across the two years. With fewer cases a change is mostly chance. Changes of more than 60% are left out too: a jump that size is more often a change in how a department reports than in crime. So is a month far below a place’s usual count, and those places are left out as well.
  • Only places with a published rate and recent figures are used: a place enters only if its latest 12 months end within 6 months of the most recent on the site. Months a department has not reported in full are never counted, the same rule as every page on the site.
  • The victim survey question uses the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Criminal Victimization, 2024 (September 2025). The perception figure is from Gallup’s annual crime poll, October 1–16, 2025.
  • The questions change each day; everyone sees the same set on the same day. There are 5 rounds a day, and the extra ones leave out the two questions that do not change from day to day: round 1, round 2, round 3, round 4, round 5.
