Most homicides first. “Same months” is the same stretch of 2025 for that place: a place through July is compared with January to July 2025. “New” means none in those months of 2025. Per 100k a year is this year’s count divided by its months, times twelve, per 100,000 residents; over a few months, small places swing a lot.

Ranked by the change in number of homicides, not by percentage, and only among the 76 places with at least 20 homicides across the two periods. With fewer cases the percentage is mostly chance: going from 1 to 3 is +200% and says nothing. A homicide count of about 10 can move by 3 or 4 either way from one year to the next with no change in the underlying risk.

These are sums of the cities and county areas on this site in each state, each over its own months, not statewide totals: towns we do not cover are missing. For the statewide picture, each state page carries the FBI’s figures for every reporting agency, which come from a different source and are not repeated here.
Common questions
answered with the data above- How many homicides have there been in 2026?
- The 241 cities and 45 county areas on this site with complete figures recorded 3,284 homicides in 2026 through each one’s latest fully reported month, 21% fewer than the 4,144 in the same months of 2025. Homicides fell in 166 of them, rose in 80 and were unchanged in 40. This is the sum of the cities and county areas CurrentCrimeMap covers, not a total for the United States: smaller towns and agencies without complete monthly reports are not in it. Each place counts January through the latest month it has reported in full; 109 of the 286 run through August.
- Which city has the most homicides in 2026?
- Among the cities and county areas on this site, Chicago, IL has the most: 328 homicides from January to September 2026, against 341 in the same months of 2025. Relative to population, the highest rate among places with at least 20 homicides across the two periods is in St. Louis, MO: 44 per 100,000 residents a year at this year’s pace.
- Are homicides going down in 2026?
- In the cities and county areas we cover, yes: 3,284 homicides so far in 2026 against 4,144 in the same months of 2025 (−21%). 166 places had fewer homicides and 80 had more. Counts in a single city can swing a lot from year to year, so the change in a small place says less than the change across all of them.
Violent and property crime too, month by month in the same places: U.S. crime trends through August 2026.

How this is counted
complete months onlyOnly the months each department has reported in full, compared with the same months of 2025. No month is estimated.
Read the full method
- Each place counts homicides from January to the latest month it has reported in full, the same rule as its own page. A month that may still be incomplete, because the department is still loading it or reported only part of it, is never counted, and no month is estimated.
- The months differ because departments report on different schedules: some are current through October, others only through January. Each place is compared with the same months of 2025, so a late reporter is not counted as a drop.
- 286 of the 302 places on this site are in the table. 11 are left out because they do not have every month of 2026 so far, or do not report homicides separately. 5 are left out because the same months of 2025 are not complete. They come back on their own once the missing months arrive.
- Figures are what each police department reports to the FBI, the same for every place. Where a department reports less to the FBI than it records, its own published count is used instead, as on its page.
- Updated every morning with the rest of the site. Download the table with every month (JSON). Methodology
