Data through August 2026, police departments via the FBI
U.S. crime trends through August 2026
From January to August 2026, violent crime in the 169 cities and county areas with complete reports was down 6% from the same months of 2025, property crime down 11% and homicides down 17%. In August alone, violent crime was down 8% from August 2025.
These are sums of the cities and county areas this site covers, not totals for the United States. A place counts only if it has reported every month from January to August in full, in both years, so each line below adds up the same places in every month.
What changed this month
August 2026 editionIn August 2026, the 169 cities and county areas with complete reports for every month since January of both years recorded 26,289 violent crimes, 8% fewer than the 28,618 they recorded in August 2025. From January to August, the total was 203,387, 6% fewer than the 216,492 in the same months of 2025. These are sums of the places this site covers, not totals for the United States.
Property crime in August 2026: 88,679 reports, 16% fewer than the 106,159 of August 2025. From January to August, 732,775, 11% fewer than the 821,893 in the same months of 2025.
Homicides: 254 in August 2026 and 313 in August 2025, across 169 places. From January to August they totaled 2,145, 17% fewer than the 2,573 in the same months of 2025. A single month of homicides can move a lot from one year to the next, so the total since January says more than the month alone.
Violent crime from January to August was lower than a year earlier in 119 of the 169 places and higher in 48, with 2 unchanged. Among places with at least 150 violent crimes in each period, the largest declines were in Great Falls, MT (−30%), Memphis, TN (−29%) and Rockford, IL (−24%), and the largest increases in Moreno Valley, CA (+76%), Tucson, AZ (+33%) and Fort Pierce, FL (+26%). Summing the covered places in each state, violent crime was lower in 25 of the 36 states with enough reports and higher in 4, and within 3% in 7.

Ranked by percentage change from January to August 2026 against the same months of 2025, among the 122 places with at least 150 violent crimes in each period; with fewer, a few cases move the percentage a lot. A large change can also come from a change in how a department records or reports crime.

A new edition comes out each month, once more than half of the places have reported the month in full.
How this is counted
complete months onlyOnly the months each department has reported in full, compared with the same months of 2025. No month is estimated.
Read the full method
- A place counts in a line only if every month from January to August 2026 and from January to August 2025 is complete on its own page. A month that may still be incomplete, because the department is still loading it or reported only part of it, keeps the place out, and no month is estimated. That is why the totals here can be smaller than the sum of every place on the site.
- Each place is counted as its page shows it: what the department reports to the FBI, or, where its FBI reports are incomplete, its own published count. Every comparison is a place against itself a year earlier, so the change is fair even where a department counts more offenses than the FBI does.
- Violent crime is homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault as the FBI counts them; property crime is burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft. Some departments do not report property crime every month, so that line covers fewer places.
- Biggest changes: places with at least 150 violent crimes in each period, ranked by percentage. A change is left out when it looks like a gap in reporting: homicides above 10% of violent crime in either period, or one period below 15% of the other.
- States with fewer than 300 violent crimes across the two periods in the places we cover are shown in light gray.
- Earlier editions are recalculated each day with the latest reports, so a late correction from a department shows up in them too. The text under “What changed this month” is the one written for each edition.
- Download this edition with every place and month (JSON). Methodology
