Data through July 2026, police departments via the FBI

U.S. crime trends through July 2026

From January to July 2026, violent crime in the 232 cities and county areas with complete reports was down 7% from the same months of 2025, property crime down 10% and homicides down 20%. In July alone, violent crime was down 10% from July 2025.

These are sums of the cities and county areas this site covers, not totals for the United States. A place counts only if it has reported every month from January to July in full, in both years, so each line below adds up the same places in every month.

This is the July 2026 edition. The latest is U.S. crime trends through August 2026.

What changed this month

July 2026 edition

In July 2026, the 232 cities and county areas with complete reports for every month since January of both years recorded 40,578 violent crimes, 10% fewer than the 45,192 they recorded in July 2025. From January to July, the total was 266,408, 7% fewer than the 286,235 in the same months of 2025. These are sums of the places this site covers, not totals for the United States.

Property crime in July 2026: 145,283 reports, 14% fewer than the 169,636 of July 2025. From January to July, 994,250, 10% fewer than the 1,107,734 in the same months of 2025.

Homicides: 401 in July 2026 and 495 in July 2025, across 232 places. From January to July they totaled 2,636, 20% fewer than the 3,283 in the same months of 2025. A single month of homicides can move a lot from one year to the next, so the total since January says more than the month alone.

Violent crime from January to July was lower than a year earlier in 168 of the 232 places and higher in 64. Among places with at least 150 violent crimes in each period, the largest declines were in Lubbock, TX (−42%), Memphis, TN (−30%) and Great Falls, MT (−29%), and the largest increases in Moreno Valley, CA (+89%), Gulfport, MS (+68%) and Tucson, AZ (+32%). Summing the covered places in each state, violent crime was lower in 27 of the 43 states with enough reports and higher in 4, and within 3% in 12.

Editions

one a month
  1. U.S. crime trends through August 2026 (latest)
  2. U.S. crime trends through July 2026

A new edition comes out each month, once more than half of the places have reported the month in full.

How this is counted

complete months only

Only the months each department has reported in full, compared with the same months of 2025. No month is estimated.

Read the full method
  • A place counts in a line only if every month from January to July 2026 and from January to July 2025 is complete on its own page. A month that may still be incomplete, because the department is still loading it or reported only part of it, keeps the place out, and no month is estimated. That is why the totals here can be smaller than the sum of every place on the site.
  • Each place is counted as its page shows it: what the department reports to the FBI, or, where its FBI reports are incomplete, its own published count. Every comparison is a place against itself a year earlier, so the change is fair even where a department counts more offenses than the FBI does.
  • Violent crime is homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault as the FBI counts them; property crime is burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft. Some departments do not report property crime every month, so that line covers fewer places.
  • Biggest changes: places with at least 150 violent crimes in each period, ranked by percentage. A change is left out when it looks like a gap in reporting: homicides above 10% of violent crime in either period, or one period below 15% of the other.
  • States with fewer than 300 violent crimes across the two periods in the places we cover are shown in light gray.
  • Earlier editions are recalculated each day with the latest reports, so a late correction from a department shows up in them too. The text under “What changed this month” is the one written for each edition.
  • Download this edition with every place and month (JSON). Methodology
