San Francisco’s 41 Analysis Neighborhoods, the set the city uses for its own statistics. Each incident is placed at the street corner the police publish for it. Population from the 2020 Census blocks inside each neighborhood, scaled to the city’s current total. Parks and places with fewer than 2,500 residents are drawn but not rated. Small areas swing more from month to month, so rates use the last 12 months.
All 37 neighborhoods side by side, with property crime and the change from a year earlier: San Francisco neighborhoods by reported crime rate.

Homicide, robbery, burglary, theft and vehicle theft come from the same reports San Francisco Police Department sends the FBI. San Francisco Police Department does not report thefts from vehicles (NIBRS codes 23F and 23G) separately to the FBI, so they are counted with the rest of theft. Robbery is part of violent crime and the others of property crime; assault and rape count in violent crime but are not listed separately, so the rows do not add up to the totals. Red means more than before, green means fewer. “Not yet” means the site does not have that month from a year earlier.
Against other places of 100,000+ residents: vehicle theft (41st highest rate of 155), robbery (7th highest rate of 152) and burglary (17th highest rate of 168).

Each line is an average day of that kind, as a multiple of the average hour of the week (dashed line), smoothed over three hours. Days run from 6 am to 6 am, so a Friday night stays on Friday. Times are when the incident happened, as recorded by San Francisco Police Department; 4% of incidents have no usable time (many unknown times are recorded as midnight or noon) and are left out.

By reported violent crime, San Francisco is above the average of the 302 cities and county areas on this site: 486 violent crimes per 100,000 residents per year over the 12 months to December 2025, −17% versus the previous 12 months. Safety varies a lot by neighborhood: Presidio runs 29 per 100,000 and South of Market 4,076.
486 violent and 2,960 property crimes per 100,000 residents per year, based on 28,098 incidents reported to San Francisco Police Department over the 12 months to December 2025. Violent crime includes 1,645 robberies (property taken by force or threat); property crime includes 3,795 burglaries and 17,064 thefts, including thefts from vehicles, which San Francisco Police Department does not report separately.
It is going down: violent crime −17% and property crime −24% over the last 12 months compared with the 12 months before.
San Francisco Police Department reported 28 homicides from January to December 2025, the latest month it has reported in full, against 35 in the same months of 2024. Over the 12 months to Dec 2025 the count was 28, or 3 per 100,000 residents.
From San Francisco Police Department, via DataSF (dataset wg3w-h783). We count reported incidents by month and offense type and divide by the Census population. Reported crime undercounts actual crime; see the methodology page for what the numbers leave out.
| What most people ask about | Reported | Per 100k |
|---|---|---|
| RobberyTaking property by force or threat | 1,645 | 202 |
| BurglaryEntering a home or business to steal | 3,795 | 465 |
| Vehicle theft | 3,050 | 374 |
What these numbers leave out: most crime never reaches the police. In the federal victim survey (BJS, 2024), about half of violent crimes and less than a third of property crimes were reported, and only a quarter of everyday thefts. Rates are per resident, which overstates them where far more people work than live: South of Market, Financial District/South Beach and Chinatown in San Francisco.
