The 58 neighborhoods of Seattle Police’s Micro-Community Policing Plans. The police department assigns each incident to its neighborhood, including the roughly one in six whose location it withholds to protect victims; those count in their neighborhood but are not on the street map. Population from the 2020 Census blocks inside each neighborhood, scaled to the city’s current total. Industrial areas and places with fewer than 2,500 residents are drawn but not rated. Small areas swing more from month to month, so rates use the last 12 months.

Homicide, robbery, burglary, theft and vehicle theft come from the same reports Seattle Police Department sends the FBI. Theft from vehicles is NIBRS codes 23F and 23G (items and parts taken from a vehicle) and theft is the rest of larceny. Robbery is part of violent crime and the others of property crime; assault and rape count in violent crime but are not listed separately, so the rows do not add up to the totals. Red means more than before, green means fewer. “Not yet” means the site does not have that month from a year earlier.
Against other places of 100,000+ residents: vehicle theft (9th highest rate of 155), robbery (11th highest rate of 152) and burglary (1st highest rate of 168).

Each line is an average day of that kind, as a multiple of the average hour of the week (dashed line), smoothed over three hours. Days run from 6 am to 6 am, so a Friday night stays on Friday. Times are when the incident happened, as recorded by Seattle Police Department; 7% of incidents have no usable time (many unknown times are recorded as midnight or noon) and are left out.

Compare Seattle side by side with Portland, San Francisco or Denver, or with any other place.
Washington as a whole has 283 violent crimes per 100,000 residents per year, as reported to the FBI over the 12 months to Jun 2026; Seattle’s rate is 144% above the state’s.
By reported violent crime, Seattle is well above the average of the 302 cities and county areas on this site: 690 violent crimes per 100,000 residents per year over the 12 months to July 2026, −4% versus the previous 12 months. Safety varies a lot by neighborhood: Madison Park runs 169 per 100,000 and Pioneer Square 13,436.
690 violent and 4,368 property crimes per 100,000 residents per year, based on 40,029 incidents reported to Seattle Police Department over the 12 months to July 2026. Violent crime includes 1,411 robberies (property taken by force or threat); property crime includes 7,749 burglaries, 11,207 thefts from vehicles and 10,333 other thefts.
It is going down: violent crime −4% and property crime −8% over the last 12 months compared with the 12 months before.
Seattle Police Department reported 13 homicides from January to July 2026, the latest month it has reported in full, against 20 in the same months of 2025. Over the 12 months to Jul 2026 the count was 27, or 3 per 100,000 residents.
From Seattle Police Department, via Seattle Open Data (dataset tazs-3rd5). We count reported incidents by month and offense type and divide by the Census population. Reported crime undercounts actual crime; see the methodology page for what the numbers leave out.
| What most people ask about | Reported | Per 100k | vs. the 12 months before |
|---|---|---|---|
| RobberyTaking property by force or threat | 1,411 | 178 | −8% |
| BurglaryEntering a home or business to steal | 7,749 | 979 | −3% |
| Theft from vehiclesItems or parts taken from a vehicle, break-ins included | 11,207 | 1,416 | −15% |
| Vehicle theft | 5,104 | 645 | −21% |
What these numbers leave out: most crime never reaches the police. In the federal victim survey (BJS, 2024), about half of violent crimes and less than a third of property crimes were reported, and only a quarter of everyday thefts. Rates are per resident, which overstates them where far more people work than live: Downtown Commercial, Belltown, First Hill and South Lake Union/Cascade in Seattle.
