The neighborhoods and communities of the City of Los Angeles as mapped in Los Angeles County’s statistical areas, with the names the city uses. Population from the 2020 Census blocks inside each neighborhood, scaled to the city’s current total. The national forest and places with fewer than 2,500 residents are drawn but not rated. Small areas swing more from month to month, so rates use the last 12 months.
All 132 neighborhoods side by side, with property crime: Los Angeles neighborhoods by reported crime rate.

Homicide, robbery, burglary, theft and vehicle theft come from the same reports Los Angeles Police Department sends the FBI. Theft from vehicles is NIBRS codes 23F and 23G (items and parts taken from a vehicle) and theft is the rest of larceny. Robbery is part of violent crime and the others of property crime; assault and rape count in violent crime but are not listed separately, so the rows do not add up to the totals. Red means more than before, green means fewer. “Not yet” means the site does not have that month from a year earlier.
Against other places of 100,000+ residents: vehicle theft (31st highest rate of 155), robbery (10th highest rate of 152) and burglary (59th highest rate of 168).

Violent crime busiest hour 8 pm
Property crime busiest hour 6 pm
Each line is an average day of that kind, as a multiple of the average hour of the week (dashed line), smoothed over three hours. Days run from 6 am to 6 am, so a Friday night stays on Friday. Times are when the incident happened, as recorded by Los Angeles Police Department; 2% of incidents have no usable time (many unknown times are recorded as midnight or noon) and are left out.

* Chicago, IL reports less to the FBI than it records; its own page leads with its own figures. Figures are what each agency reports to the FBI, over the last 12 months it has reported in full, so the months differ. See all 302 cities and county areas in the rankings

By reported violent crime, Los Angeles is well above the average of the 302 cities and county areas on this site: 646 violent crimes per 100,000 residents per year over the 12 months to August 2026, −5% versus the previous 12 months. Safety varies a lot by neighborhood: Palisades Highlands runs 102 per 100,000 and Little Tokyo 9,468.
646 violent and 2,083 property crimes per 100,000 residents per year, based on 106,383 incidents reported to Los Angeles Police Department over the 12 months to August 2026. Violent crime includes 7,043 robberies (property taken by force or threat); property crime includes 9,961 burglaries, 22,737 thefts from vehicles and 30,874 other thefts.
It is going down: violent crime −5% and property crime +15% over the last 12 months compared with the 12 months before.
Los Angeles Police Department reported 143 homicides from January to August 2026, the latest month it has reported in full, against 151 in the same months of 2025. Over the 12 months to Aug 2026 the count was 218, or 6 per 100,000 residents.
From Los Angeles Police Department, via Los Angeles Open Data (dataset k7nn-b2ep). We count reported incidents by month and offense type and divide by the Census population. Reported crime undercounts actual crime; see the methodology page for what the numbers leave out.
| What most people ask about | Reported | Per 100k | vs. the 12 months before |
|---|---|---|---|
| RobberyTaking property by force or threat | 7,043 | 181 | −5% |
| BurglaryEntering a home or business to steal | 9,961 | 255 | −22% |
| Theft from vehiclesItems or parts taken from a vehicle, break-ins included | 22,737 | 583 | +22% |
| Vehicle theft | 17,142 | 440 | +14% |
What these numbers leave out: most crime never reaches the police. In the federal victim survey (BJS, 2024), about half of violent crimes and less than a third of property crimes were reported, and only a quarter of everyday thefts. Rates are per resident, which overstates them where far more people work than live: Downtown, Carthay, Westchester and Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles.
